Timeline

IUI Timeline

  • November, 2013 – Annual physical, start the referral ball a-rolling
  • December, 2013 – See a gynecologist, take a round of Progesterone to get a period
  • January, 2014 – Consult with RE, start trial of Metformin to try for natural ovulation (read: see if we can do it without Clomid)
  • April 10, 2014 – Follow-up with RE, get the go-ahead for IUI #1 this cycle! If it doesn’t work out, I’ll go back for cycle day 3 tests (blood work and ultrasound)
  • April 28, 2014 – IUI #1, finally! Delayed ovulation this cycle, got + OPK on CD 32, went in for a CD 33 IUI – BFN #1
  • May 13, 2014 – baseline (day 4) ultrasound reveals ovarian cyst – May/June cycle canceled
  • June 21, 2014 – baseline (day 3) ultrasound all clear – good to go for IUI #2
  • July 10, 2014 – IUI #2 (CD22) – BFN #2
  • August 6, 2014 – IUI #3 (CD14) – BFN #3
  • Sepbember 6, 2014 – IUI #4 (CD18) – BFN #4
  • Decide to add Clomid, a trigger shot, progesterone support, and ultrasound monitoring into the mix.
  • October 13, 2014 – IUI #5 (CD24) – BFN #5
  • October 28, 2014 – begin another Clomid cycle. Ultrasound monitoring reveals follicle growth up to 14mm, and then shrinkage. Anovulatory cycle, 54 days. RE declares me Clomid-resistant
  • December 21, 2014 – Finally start a new cycle after a 5-day course of Provera and 6 days of waiting after that. Begin ultrasound monitoring for a new cycle, decide to use Letrozole.
  • January 6, 2015 – IUI #6 (CD17) – BFN #6
  • Submitted prior authorization for coverage to BCBS as my policy states that ovulatory disorders are covered after 6 cycles of ovulation induction. Denied. Appealed and again denied.
  • February 6, 2015 – IUI #7 (CD 15) – BFN #7
  • March 13, 2015 – IUI #8 (CD 20) – BFN #8
  • April – skipped cycle
  • May 9, 2015 – IUI #9 (CD 15) – BFN #9
  • June 7, 2015 – IUI #10 (CD 15) – BFN #10
  • Submitted prior authorization for IVF to BCBS as now I have had 6 medicated cycles (+4 IUIs without medication). DeniedBCBS states that the fact that I’m using donor sperm overrules my diagnosed PCOS, so I have to do 12 IUI cycles out of pocket before infertility coverage kicks in.
  • July 2015 – skipped cycle while waiting for insurance decision. Since I wasn’t taking meds, had a mega-cycle (45 days)
  • August 2015 – baseline ultrasound revealed large (5cm) ovarian cyst. Skip another cycle. Do not pass go, do not collect $200.
  • September 24, 2015 – IUI #11 (CD 17) – BFN #11
  • October 24, 2015 – IUI #12 (CD 15) – BFN #12
  • Submitted prior authorization for IVF to BCBS as I now have had 12 out-of-pocket, unsuccessful IUIs with donor sperm. Approval! finally

  2. This is an awesome timeline. My wife and I did a post on all expenses but a timeline would’ve been a good idea too. Thanks for sharing! – Em

  3. Just found your blog and read through all of the posts! My wife and I just had our 6th BFN and I’m need of other lesbian/queer family ttc narratives. This process is a rollercoaster and I appreciate your willingness to share your story.
